I’ve been freelancing for a year!

So, I’ve been out on my own in the big wide design world for a year now, here are some thoughts from along the way!

Networking Is Key

As a hardcore introvert this one is a challenge for me but the best way I’ve found to build your client list is to get out there and form relationships with like minded people.

You never know who you’ll meet and even if they’re not a direct client, they may be able to refer you work in the future.

You’ve Gotta Show Up!

As a sole trader you get out what you put in, showing up every day (or most days) and getting stuck into the not so fun work is super important.

Do the admin, chase the leads, refine your processes and prime your existing client relationships and you will see growth!

Learn How To Say No

Another one I’m still working on - but not every client is for you. Just because someone approaches you for a project doesn’t mean you have to take it!

If they’re throwing up red flags from the get go or the brief is something you know you’re going to hate, saying no might save you (and them) a big old headache!

Set Boundaries!

Aw man, boundaries are so imporatant! You always want to go above and beyond for your clients, but if you set a precedent for always being available on the phone at 8pm or smashing out “just a quick one” over the weekend you may find yourself in a bit of a rinse and repeat cycle.

It’s ok to call back in the morning or say “sorry, don’t work weekends but will happily get to it on Monday”

Freedom And Flexibility

This is the biggest benefit for me as a sole trader, having a couple of young kids around means I’m deep in a world of drop-offs, pick-ups and endless activities so being able to work around their schedule is all kinds of good! But, with this amazing benefit comes the other side of the coin, which is the lack of reliable income. There are good weeks and bad weeks, it usually evens out over the month but this definitely needs to be considered before jumping into the freelance life!
